In this talk, Krutika takes us through her personal experience of her first attempt at exploring Gujarati type and designing a Gujarati typeface, as part of the Alphabettes Mentorship Program 2020. This talk is inspired by the phrase - ‘The process makes the product’, which is her unique take on the famous quote ‘the journey is the destination’ She showcases the entire process of her Work-In-Progress variable Gujarati typeface, with different exciting stages of the project - from Type Design Research, Gujarati calligraphy with bamboo reed pens, various Letterform, flesh and style sketches, 3D and variable explorations to character design and refinement in Glyphs app. She also shares a glimpse into her mentor’s approach to teaching type design and personal blog where she writes about her insights from this experience. This project is very close to her heart, because it was done with a very personal intent of creating work connected to her cultural roots and combining that with her keen interest in type design.
